Welcome to or Special Day Class at Arcata Elementary

Our teacher, Ms. Gilbert, has a wealth of experience with special education services.

 

Biography

I am the mother of a child who has severe cognitive delays and orthopedic impairments and who is also Deaf and Blind. I know all too well how daunting navigating the educational system can be when it comes to advocating for your child with special needs. My goal is to help the families of my students gain a better understanding of what education looks like for a student with special needs.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe in active learning. Students should have an opportunity to learn by doing. It is my responsibility as a teacher to create an environment where my students feel comfortable asking questions and expressing themselves openly. My goal is to teach my students how to think critically, work hard, advocate for themselves as well as respect themselves and the work that they do and most importantly succeed in a world that is constantly changing. I provide a balanced curriculum with high expectations in a loving, safe and structured environment.
